Reflexology

Nichiren Daishonin says, “If you light a lantern for another, it will also brighten your own way.”

History of Reflexology

Evidence of reflexologists at work has been found in an Egyptian tomb which dates back to 2330BC in ancient Egypt.  It was also practiced in China, India, Africa and many parts of the world for 1000s of years.  It finally came to the West in the 19th century as Zone Therapy by Dr William Fitzgerald in 1913 and later was developed in the 1930 by Eunice Ingham.

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a non-invasive complementary therapy, which uses the hands to stimulate reflex points on the feet and hands.  The reflex points on the feet and hands correspond to the internal organs of the body.  All major organs, glands and structures of the body are mapped in miniature on reflex points on the feet and hands.

Stimulation of the internal organs of the body corrects imbalances in the body caused through illness, accidents, dis-ease, life style or / and disease.  This stimulation restores balance to the whole body clearing stagnant energy and creating flow in the meridians and body system.

Reflexology works on the whole body NOT just the symptoms– this is why it is very good for promoting physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.  Reflexology is a holistic therapy.  Please remember that Reflexologists do not diagnose nor claim a cure.  They offer a treatment which is great to help a person to relax as well as relief stress.  It is also effective in the treatment of a wide range of acute and chronic conditions and dis-ease.  Once the body is fine-tuned and in-tuned, it is wise to have regular treatments to maintain your health and well-being – just like a top up service.

Touch in Reflexology

Touch on the feet is adapted to the client’s needs.  Depending on the health of the client touch can be firm, medium or light.  Some clients require only a feather touch; while others require deep pressure.  Touch can be applied in at a slow speed or a medium speed or a fast speed.  Touch does vary in a reflexology session.

Before a session

Make sure you have not eaten for at least 2 hours before the session.  You can eat a light meal after the session.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing.  You can come straight from the office as only your feet will be uncovered and treated.  Your feet will be covered with a towel during the session.

What happens in my first visit?

You will fill up a form and a thorough examination will be made of your feet while you sit or lie down.  This first session will usually take one hour and a half.  The following sessions will be an hour long.

The study of the feet include looking for corns, verrucaes, calluses, bunions, and all manner of ailments common with the feet.  They do not prevent you from receiving treatment.  If a part of your foot is inaccessible Toks will treat your hand instead.  In some cases she may wear disposable gloves during the treatment.  If treatment is not appropriate Toks will advise you and suggest some other treatment.

Who can have Reflexology?

Everyone can have reflexology – from babies and children to adults, and the elderly.  The touch is adjusted to suit everyone and is safe and gentle and natural.

What happens if I feel uncomfortable?

Toks will monitor you throughout the session.  You can stop the session at any time if you feel uncomfortable.  Toks can usually explain any uncomfortable feeling you have and reassure you if it is OK to precede.  Most times it is just an indication of congestion or imbalance in a corresponding part of your body.  Remember, YOUR feet are in safe hands.  They can only get to feel better than when they arrived.

How long is a session?

A session lasts an hour.  The actual amount of time working on the feet is usually 45 minutes.  The first session will include a consultation process and a form to fill up and is an hour and 30 minutes.

What is treatment like?

Only your shoes and socks will need to be removed.  You can sit or lie down.  Treatment is on the feet and sometimes on the hand if areas of the feet cannot be reached.  Toks will use her thumb and fingers to apply various forms of pressure and technique to create flow within the body organs and stimulate them.

All the main body organs and body parts are worked on via the feet e.g. digestive system, kidney, face, head, joints and lymphatic system.  It is truly a fascinating massage to receive.  Any feeling of discomfort vanishes as balance and flow is restored in congested or blocked areas in the body..

How does it work?

Through pressure on the reflex points on the feet, imbalances in the body can both be detected and treated.  This is because the pressure on the reflex points on the feet corresponds to internal organs in the body.  Massaging the feet is massaging the internal organs of the body.

Reflexology has been found to improve the general health of a person bringing in a sense of well being and increased energy level.  It restores balance to the body’s system and stimulates the body’s natural defense mechanism and promotes healing.

Reflexology treats the whole person and not just the ailment.  When the body does not function properly due to an imbalance in the body system, vital energy depletion or blocked meridians then it is time for a Reflexology treatment.  The reflex points are stimulated to create healing and movement and flow within the body systems and cause the body to start to heal itself.  Injury and illness are worked on by trained hands to restore harmony and peace via the feet and hands. This is why most people benefit from reflexology.

Reflexology is based on the concept that every part of the body is connected by vital energy pathways which end in reflex areas in the feet and the hands. By applying gentle, controlled pressure, to the feet or hands, imbalances can be detected and corrected to help restore harmony to all the body systems.  Reflexology is deeply relaxing, revitalizing and harmonizing.

How will I feel?

How do you feel when touched on your feet?  Have you had someone touch your feet before?  Different people respond to touch on the feet in different ways.  .

For example if you are ticklish you may not be able to receive and enjoy reflexology.  However once a touch is identified that does not make you feel ticklish then the session can start.   Some people may experience discomfort during the session such as pain or hurt but this is minimal and is usually the toxins breaking down from the healing touch of reflexology.

At the beginning you may feel anxious about having your feet touched.  Please do not worry.  Toks will enjoy pampering your feet.  Once a comfortable touch is established you may find yourself enjoying and relaxing into the experience of reflexology.

During the session you should just try to let go and relax and empty your mind and enjoy and allow the experience of being pampered on your feet.  You may feel a sense of wellbeing overwhelm you.  You may feel sleepy and fall asleep.  You may snore!  That is OK.  You may feel like crying or tired.  You may feel alert and refreshed.

By the end of the session you WILL feel relaxed, pampered and nurtured.  Later you may find you need to use the bathroom more often as the body eliminates and flushes out toxins released by reflexology and the body begins its own healing process.  Some may develop pimples as toxins flush out through the skin.  These are all positive side effects and show that reflexology does work.  Drink lots of water after the session and find time to rest if you can.

To the Egyptians the Ankh represents eternal everlasting life which cannot die.  The loop is the feminine / womb.  The elongated section is masculine / penis.  Together they form life. The Ankh bestows power and immortality on anyone who possessed it because the gods life force is marinated though their ankh.

The life energy emanating from the ankh can be absorbed by anyone around. It is an antenna for the divine power of life that permeates the universe.  The amulet is a powerful talisman that provides the wearer with protection from the evil forces of decay and degeneration. How Often Should I Have Reflexology?

A course of treatment is a very healthy way to treat your overall internal body organs.  Treatment can be tailored to suit your life style and your health as well as your response to reflexology.  A discussion with Toks will clarify your individual needs and requirements.   This will be spread over a period of weeks to enable your body to adjust and heal itself.

It is generally recommended to have a reflexology session on a weekly basis to flush out any toxins for a period of one month.  Then depending on how improved you are reduce to a session every two weeks.  The overall treatment session should be over a period of 8-10 weeks.  The number of treatments will vary from person to person depending on various reasons such as lifestyle, health and response to treatment.  On the first day of the treatment an approximate number of treatments will be suggested by Toks Beverley Coker.
